OPENING REMARKS
 

The pursuit of an online virtual university is probably as old as networking itself. There have been various incarnations of virtual teaching over the years and a great many more simulations. At the same time, online games have recently exploded onto the popular culture and will play a significant role in shaping society to come. Like a real university or a virtual game, an online learning environment should not be a static collection of simulations but rather an engaging and fun social experience. This project represents my efforts at achieving this vision of a game-based virtual university. This project is known as the Massively Multi-User Synchronous Collaborative Learning Environment, the MMUSCLE™ project. Its first incarnation will teach Physics using a hihg-fantasy MMORPG model in a game currently known as Physics Adventures in Space-Time or PAST™. This section of our website will detail the educational portion of the game. It will serve as a compliment to The Game side which outlines the entertainment aspects of our game.

GUIDING PHILOSOPHY
 

These are a few of my guiding principles in the quest to create my world:

  1. MMOGs can be used to create engaging and successful educational worlds
  2. Educational MMOGs can be used to compliment established curricula or...
  3. ...can be self-contained, with curriculum and instruction built into the world.
  4. Socialization in and experimentability of the Virtual World are keys to educational success...
  5. ... as well as access to explorations and experimentations impossible in the Real World.
  6. No "stealth learning"; we will not hide our education objectives.
  7. Exploit one-to-one correspondence between MMORPG and lab-based classroom elements.
PHYSICS PEDAGOGY
 

Following our principles, these are the concepts we wish to cover with PAST:

  1. Conceptual Newtonian Mechanics
  2. Common Mechanics Misconceptions
  3. Math: Vectors, Scalars, Algebra, and Trigonometry
  4. Kinematics: Time, Displacement, Velocity, and Acceleration
  5. Dynamics: Mass, Force, Impulse, and Work
GAME OBJECTIVES
 

We finally use the pedagogy as a guide for our game design:

  1. Allow player and world to enable and manipulate realistic Game Physics.
  2. Level and Narrative design based on Physics taxonomy
  3. Create RPG Combat based on scientific procedures
  4. Create RPG Equipment based on Physics lab equipment
  5. Create RPG Quests based on Traditional Physics homework, tests, and labs.
  6. Non violent gameplay with "Combat" replaced with “Grief” and "Measure"
  7. Fantasy story with magic as way of violating Physics
